This project has developed after seeing the negative shift in the youth culture of our towns. Our young people are involved in activities and situations that are destructive and potentially life changing. Parents are experiencing serious behaviours within their own homes. Many are shocked by the state of things and many panic because they have no answers from their own experience. The reality is that our kids are now exposed to violence, precocious sexual activity, profanity, defiance and aggression that my generation cannot fathom. This definitely is a call to action for every generation. We need to be the advocates for the needs of our own children within our own community with the purpose of reversing this negative trend and turning it around.
Wellington North, on the edge of Wellington County (Guelph), Grey Bruce County (Owen Sound), Dufferin County (Orangeville) and Perth County (Stratford) is an hour drive away from agencies, social services, help-lines, crisis centres, legal aid, support programs and resources. Many have experienced the frustration of gaining access to these resources. Over the years, we have experienced the frustration of parents trying to find appropriate services including doctors, counselors, therapists, financial help and lawyers before a “crisis” deems them on the priority list. We have also heard the concern of the agencies themselves, which echo the frustration that they feel from the other end of the help-line miles away. Our community needs accessible support from within itself. We need to help ourselves by empowering and utilizing our own resources. It is a known fact that urban centres differ greatly from rural areas in many ways, as do the methods of serving the needs of these two distinct populations. New Growth Family Centre Inc. has been established as a valuable grassroots organization driven by the personal experiences, professional background and caring attitude of it’s directors and staff.
New Growth Family Centre Inc. was initiated in 2003 as a charitable organization to meet the following objectives.
At this time, 20 years later the objectives have all been initiated and are all ongoing, especially the Therapeutic Learning Program which now offers a Respite Day Program placement for youth between the ages of 6 and 16. Students are placed and sometimes funded by the local school boards after all school resources have been exhausted. CMHA-WWD ( Community Mental Health Association Waterloo Wellington Dufferin) and Family and Children’s Services also refer and fund our program for children and youth in care.
The extreme needs of children and youth in our community are a growing concern and a priority. New Growth Family Centre Inc. is recognized as a part of the solution, as an advocate for parents, as an alternate Therapeutic Learning Environment, as a support program for school achievement, as a resource for Children’s Aids, family Health Teams and Mental Health Services. New Growth Family Centre Inc. is located in a 8500 sq ft facility centralized in Mount Forest and easily accessible to the surrounding communities.
Here Now!!! Aletha's Place
New Growth Family Centre Inc. will be opening our respite care home **Aletha's Place.** This location will accommodate up to 4 over night or week end respites. At this facility clients will have access to all the resources of the Family Centre. Here, clients can engage in Gym Sports, Music Jams, Arts and Crafts, Wii games and more. In the auditorium enjoy a favorite movie on the giant screen. If the weather is permitting we provide outdoor activities, hiking camping or even venture into the paint ball area that is at our pond facility just 7 kilometers away. What a great way to come and get a taste of good wholesome family FUN!
Our Philosophy:
All Students would do well if they could. They don’t need more motivation or consequences. They need a different therapeutic approach that will teach them the skills they are lacking. All behavior arises from a state of Stress, Fear and Anxiety.
"Durable, effective intervention must focus both on the child (who has skills to learn and problems to solve) and on people in the child’s environment ( who need to understand the true nature of the child’s difficulties and provide opportunities for the problem to be solved and the skills to be learned and practiced).”
